Embarrassing confessions of a convenient humanitarian
I was in Africa 48 hours after my last official day in the Marine Corps.
I went there to fill a void in my soul that yearned for a stinky ass, poverty stricken, polluted, primitive, shithole, with really nice people. I could have just driven an hour south to Tijuana, but Tijuana people aren't too nice, and plus Africa was so much more cliche, I just couldn't resist. Plus, I wanted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, scuba dive in Zanzibar, live with a local host family, and volunteer in an orphanage or two. (who doesn't?)
Once in Africa, I fell in love with the people who lived in incredible, depressing poverty, and yet lived happy, loving, giving, and friendly lives.
Needless to say, I have a soft spot for Africans now, and therefore 5% of the profits from this book will go towards the orphanage schools that I worked for in Africa. God Bless America! and Africa!
Oh, out of respect for her and her family, I should mention that I fell in love with the adorable African child in the picture above, and foolishly tried to sneak her home in my check-in suitcase.
She didn't make it....(Cue the song, "Circle of Life")

My Walk to the top of africa
While climbing Mount Kilimanjaro I realized that my prior physical accomplishments mean nothing above 15,000 feet. I barely made it.
You're welcome
I had an interesting encounter with a porter upon arrival to my hotel after climbing Kilimanjaro.
Plight of Africa
While volunteering in an orphanage-school, I had an interesting conversation with a teacher that revealed some things that might be holding Africa back from not sucking, at life.
Hard bargain
I had a hard time paying full price for 22 year old, used, American donations. This was a close call.
